The Andrews government will end its $3000 subsidy for Victorians who buy new electric vehicles, cutting short a handout intended to drive faster uptake of zero-emissions cars.

amid a backlash over plans to levy a distance-based charge on electric vehicle drivers, which environmentalists and the EV industry said would slow the shift to cleaner vehicles.Credit:Victoria committed $46 million to the subsidy and said it would be handed out to 20,000 new car buyers, but the scheme was left out of last month’s state budget.

Victoria has set the target for 50 per cent of all new car sales to be zero-emissions vehicles by 2030. in July 2021 to replace road taxes that motorists pay through the fuel excise levy. The 2.6 cents per-kilometre charge equates to about $350 a year for the average driver.Victoria’s electric vehicle policy “was already the world’s worst, and somehow it just got worse”.

“We’re spending $19 million to accelerate the roll-out of electric vehicle charging infrastructure across regional Victoria, supporting the development of new charging technologies along with funds for local councils, government and businesses to transition fleets to EVs,” the spokesperson said.
