An elderly Victorian man has died from coronavirus, raising Australia’s death toll as the state struggles through a spike in new cases.

A Victorian man in his 90s died last night, and another man in his 60s died this morning. Both men died in hospitals in Victoria.

The Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews announced the death of the man in his 90s during a press conference today. The Victorian Health Minister Jenny Mikakos said on Twitter the man in his 60s died during the morning. “He was in the care of one of our hospitals,” Mr Andrews said. “We send our condolences and our best wishes to his family and loved ones. For his friends, this will be a very difficult day for them and we send our sympathies to each and every person affected by that tragedy.

“Out of respect for the family, I will provide no further details as to that person’s identity or any further details about that case.” The deaths comes as the state of Victoria is grappling with a spike in new coronavirus cases — recording an average of 90 new cases per day across the last five days. The number of cases spiked again today when the Premier announced a record 127 new cases of the virus had been detected in the state in the last 24 hours.
