Premier DanielAndrewsMP has dismissed human rights concerns surrounding Victoria’s strict curfew, saying they are not the issue at hand.

Premier Daniel Andrews has dismissed human rights concerns surrounding Victoria’s strict curfew, saying they are not the issue at hand. The Premier was probed on Friday about his response to Liberal MP Tim Wilson’s request for an examination into the curfew by the Human Rights Commission.

“This is not about human rights. It is about human life,” Mr Andrews responded. “What [Mr Wilson] chooses to do with his team is a matter for him. “There are very few legal reasons to leave your home. The curfew doesn't change that. "It simply means police have an easier job.” Image: News Corp Australia

Victoria has engaged in ‘serious breaches of human rights’: Liberal Senator | Sky News AustraliaVictoria has engaged in ‘serious breaches of human rights’: Liberal Senator | Sky News AustraliaLiberal Senator Sarah Henderson has slammed the Victorian government’s “serious breach of human rights” and has called for intervention from the Human Rights Commission.\n\n“As a Senator for Victoria it’s my assessment that this curfew is in breach, serious breach, of human rights,” Ms Henderson told Sky News host Chris Kenny.\n\nShe said among the numerous potential breaches relating to Victoria’s 8pm curfew, the right to freedom of movement is of particular note.\n\n“The right to freedom of movement can be limited if it’s justifiable (but) there’s no rational objective of this curfew. There’s no health rationale, and there is no request by the police”.\n\nVictorian Police Chief Commissioner Shane Patton revealed on radio the police were not consulted before the implementation of a curfew in Melbourne, claiming it was the Chief Health Officer's idea.\n\nHis comments contradicted remarks made by Chief Health Officer Brett Sutton who denied being involved in the decision and Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews who claimed the curfew in Melbourne was designed to help Victorian police enforce lockdown rules.\n\nMs Henderson said the decision was “completely improper” and led her to make contact with the Human Rights Commission.\n\n“This is tantamount to a police state,” she said.\n\n“This is megalomania out of control.”\n\nImage: Getty

If you want to describe it that way, then that's entirely a matter for you,' the premier said. \n\n'This is a captain’s call curfew that Daniel Andrews has ordered,' Mr Southwick told Sky News host Chris Kenny. \n\n'Again, no consultation with the chief health officer, no consultation with Victoria police'. \n\n'And for the premier to go out each and every day and say that he doesn’t do anything without the consultation of the chief health officer is a lie.\n\n'He’s been caught out and he needs to immediately remove this curfew that is putting Victorians under so much pressure,' Mr Southwick said. \n\nImage: Getty \n\n

You could maybe go shopping at 11:00pm tonight if the supermarket were open,” he said.\n\nThe Premier made the further claim, “if you don't limit movement across the community, you won't limit case numbers … and we won't get to the point where we can open up”.\n\n“Ultimately having the curfew simply makes the difficult and critically important job of Victoria Police … as simple as we can”.\n\nExercising and shopping within curfew hours was a sacrifice which is “worth it” when it came to the difficult task limiting movement and limiting case numbers, Mr Andrews said. \n\nImage: AP\n
