Police are treating as suspicious a fire that destroyed a Melbourne tobacco shop on Saturday morning, after a series of arson attacks on tobacco retailers.
One person inside the building and two others in neighbouring shops had escaped before firefighters arrived and contained the fire.The shopfront was destroyed and glass shattered across the footpath, though neighbouring businesses were reportedly unharmed and resumed trading on Saturday.and other businesses believed to be involved in the sale of illicit tobacco since March 2023, according to Victoria police assistant commissioner, Martin O’Brien.
Police have searched more than 100 tobacco stores and arrested more than 60 people alleged to be involved in the sale of illicit tobacco since the taskforce was established in October.
