Victoria's Water Police are warning vessel operators to take extra care after a dramatic weekend on the water, with at least three serious jetski incidents reported.
After a dramatic weekend on the water, including at least three serious jetski incidents, Victoria's Water Police Squad is warning vessel operators to take care. As temperatures soared across the state in the first week of 2025, water police were called to more than 100 incidents — many of them relating to dangerous behaviour by jetskiers. Police said that figure was about six times higher than the same period last year, when 17 call-outs were recorded.
A collision between a jetski and a boat about 2:30pm on Saturday led to a 14-year-old boy being flown to the Royal Children's Hospital. The 43-year-old male jetski rider and a 14-year-old second passenger were rescued from the water and were taken to Frankston Hospital.Further down the peninsula, in Rye, police also responded to another jetski incident about 3:20pm on Saturday, where a jetski carrying three male teenagers nosedived into a wave. And on Friday, a 19-year-old jetski rider sustained serious middle body injuries when he collided with another jetski at Parkdale. Water Police Squad Inspector James Dalton said many of the more than 100 call-outs related to poor behaviour, while others were from broken-down vessels, or those that were sinking. 'Really significant charges will possibly be laid, and three or four people ended up in hospital with significant injuries over the weekend, just because of speed and people not watching where they're going on watercraft,' Inspector Dalton said. He said all jetskiers needed to be wearing a life jacket and carrying a torch (to signal for help or alert other watercraft at night). 'The main things we're finding they don't have are life jackets and they're not registered, unlicensed users and going too fast in the shared zones in Port Philllip,' he said. 'It is one of the most significant concerns because people are out there swimming with their families and a jetski goes screaming past at 20 knots'
