A new, lower level maths subject will be offered to year 12 students in a bid to boost the number of senior students studying maths and respond to employer concerns about the numeracy skills of young job seekers.
The Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority has confirmed it will introduce foundation maths as a year 12 subject. It's hoped the new subject will attract students who would not otherwise choose a maths subject for year 12, as well as students undertaking the state's vocational high school certificate, VCAL.Foundation maths is available now only to year 11 students and is the easiest VCE maths subject in that year.
The new subject will be carefully designed to discourage students from downgrading their maths study. The Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority evaluates VCE subjects every five years, and said its decision to extend foundation maths to year 12 followed best practice both in Australia and worldwide.
Professor Brown also said expanding foundation maths would not arrest the worrying decline of students studying higher level maths – specialist maths – in year 12.
