Victorian drivers have been put on notice by police after thousands of motorists were caught out disobeying the road rules.

Victorian motorists have had to be reminded about the"basics of good driving" after thousands were nabbed doing the wrong thing, including running red lights and failing to obey stop signs.

These included 7984 infringements for doing the wrong thing at traffic lights, including driving through on red and ignoring traffic lane signals. "The saying goes: 'Little things add up'. And nothing could be truer when it comes to your behaviour on the road," State Highway Patrol – Solo Unit's Acting Sen-Sgt Joshua Perkins said.

The police figures, covering July 1 2022 to June 30 last year, also show 2177 infringements were issued for failing to drive with a sufficient distance behind a vehicle.
