Speaking at 5pm, the CFA's Jason Heffernan said the fire burning in the Lavers Hill region was moving quickly south and was likely to affect both the Great Ocean and communities south of the area. "We've seen temperatures in the high 30s but it was those hot northerly winds today that have caused the problem and those single-digit humidity numbers which has led to a number of major fires starting across Victoria this afternoon."

South of Ballarat, an out-of-control bushfire has also threatened communities near Dereel and Rokewood.Gellibrand River Hotel manager Dorthe Koorn said her business was about 4-5 kilometres from the blaze and she could see smoke.
