Two Victorian clubs are vying for the signature of Gold Coast Suns midfielder Matt Rowell, while the GWS Giants aim to retain young talent Finn Callaghan amidst key off-season departures.
Two prominent Victorian clubs are vying for the signature of Gold Coast Suns star Matt Rowell , whose contract expires at the end of the season. Seven reporter Mitch Cleary revealed that Rowell met with Geelong coach Chris Scott and football boss Andrew Mackie at a private apartment in Melbourne's bayside area late last year. The Western Bulldogs are also reportedly interested in Rowell.
While the Suns believe Rowell is committed to their cause, he is considered a potential replacement for Joel Selwood and would fit well alongside Max Holmes and Bailey Smith in Geelong's midfield. However, the 23-year-old is a vital player for Suns coach Damien Hardwick's plans to lead the club to its first finals appearance. Meanwhile, the GWS Giants are confident about retaining young midfielder Finn Callaghan despite several key departures during the off-season. The Giants lost Harry Perryman to Collingwood, Nick Haynes to Carlton, and James Peatling and Isaac Cumming to Adelaide. GWS coach Adam Kingsley stated that Callaghan will make a decision based on what's best for himself and his family, whether that be staying with the Giants or pursuing other opportunities. Kingsley emphasized the club's commitment to providing Callaghan with as many opportunities as possible within the salary cap constraints. He acknowledged the delicate balance between retaining star players and ensuring the long-term sustainability of the team's salary structure. Kingsley explained that overpaying certain players could compromise the club's ability to keep other talented individuals like Sam Taylor, Brent Daniels, and upcoming prospects. He likened it to a complex jigsaw puzzle, where each piece must be carefully considered
