Victorian Health Minister Mary-Anne Thomas was forced to seek “urgent” approval for a bailout of the state’s hospitals, freedom of information documents have revealed.
Victoria 's Treasurer was asked to approve a $422 million bailout of the state's Health Services, with documents released under FOI warning hospitals would be"unable to make payroll" unless the"urgent payment" was made.
“I am writing to you seeking your support for my department to make urgent payments of $422 million to Health Services in advance of the scheduled ERC meeting on Wednesday 14th June 2023,” the Health Minister said in the letter. Documents released under FOI showed all Victoria's Health Services were forecasting deficits at the end of 2022-23 financial year. Picture: Supplied
The document outlines the financial positions of Victoria’s 22 Health services, with Melbourne Health - which operates the Royal Melbourne Hospital – listed as $104 million in the red. Victorian shadow health minister Georgie Crozier said the documents were “yet another example of Labor’s financial mismanagement” which was having a “direct impact on frontline health services”.
