A Victorian judge has been reprimanded for using 'demeaning' and 'gratuitous' language towards a woman at the centre of a sexual assault trial.

A judicial watchdog says Victorian Judge Geoffrey Chettle "lacked sensitivity" towards an alleged sexual assault victim when he made comments in court. The judicial commission has called on the head of the County Court to "counsel" the judge on respect in the courtroom.

However, in a statement, the commission labelled Judge Chettle's comments as "pejorative, demeaning and incongruous". After consuming drugs, the woman was said to be "unconscious, unresponsive and incapable of consenting to the sexual acts" when she was allegedly assaulted. Judge Chettle "totally rejected" the claims of bias, but conceded his chambers had mistakenly excluded the defence lawyers on six emails.
