The Leader of the Victorian Nationals has criticised the Victorian government's secretive treaty negotiations with Indigenous groups, arguing the lack of transparency undermines democracy.

Negotiations surrounding the agreement between the Allan government and the state’s Indigenous population have been shrouded in secrecy since they began. The Coalition pulled its support for a treaty agreement in Victoria in January 2024 – citing issues around cultural heritage and secrecy surrounding the process.
“We wanted to see how those discussions progressed and if there were some good ideas put forward that would actually help some of those close the gap indicators, and improve them. We would be happy to be part of those discussions. That has not evolved," Mr Walsh said on Monday.
