The Victorian government has lifted a ban on robotic surgery for public hospitals, allowing more patients access to the technology. However, hospitals will need to fund the expensive equipment themselves, as the government cites a lack of sufficient evidence for direct funding.

Thousands more Victorians will gain access to robotic surgery at public hospitals following the state government's decision to overturn a long-standing ban on the technology. The Department of Health now supports public health services wishing to invest in robotic surgery , though they will need to finance the technology themselves.

The policy document released by the government states that centralised funding for robotic surgery will not be provided due to insufficient clinical and economic evidence. Public hospitals interested in starting robotic surgery services must use their existing budgets or seek donations to cover the costs, which range from $1 million to $4.5 million for the platform, plus annual servicing fees and patient-specific expenses. Robotic surgery is highly valued by surgeons for its ability to perform complex procedures with greater control and precision, leading to reduced blood loss, shorter hospital stays, and fewer complications for patients
