Most of the electorates with a large Chinese Australian population voted Yes, but one Liberal MP believes this has more to do with wealth, youth and location.
Nine out of the top 10 federal electorates by the number of Chinese-language speakers voted more heavily in favour of thethan the national count, suggesting the Coalition may still struggle to win over that demographic.
Asian Australian Alliance founder Erin Chew was part of a group of 100 prominent Chinese Australians who supported the Yes vote.The Victorian seat of Chisholm, which includes suburbs such as Ashwood, Blackburn, Box Hill and Burwood, and has the country’s largest Chinese population, returned a Yes vote of 49.59 per cent as of 3pm on Sunday, considerably higher than the national Yes vote of 39.56.8.
