Western Australia will become the first Australian state to mandate booster shots and will reinstate a hard border with all states from Boxing Day, reports Heather McNeill

Premier Mark McGowan has revealed WA will become the first Australian state to mandate booster shots.

Current medical advice is for a third dose to be administered five months after the second jab, however ATAGI is reviewing shortening the timeframe. The strict measure, just six weeks out from WA’s reopening date, comes as concerns around the Omicron variant and its transmissibility grow. “In terms of when we do reopen, obviously we’ll look to have increased public health measures like masks.”

Mr Morrison said the public health advice provided at National Cabinet was for masks to be worn indoors in public spaces to reduce the pace at which COVID-19 spreads. “It’s important we focus the PCR test on people who are close contacts and people who are symptomatic,” he said, adding those requiring a test to get on a plane and enter another state were also causing increased wait times for those who were actually unwell.
