WA Police Commissioner and State Emergency Co-ordinator Chris Dawson said he would not permit anyone into the state who did not have an ‘essential fundamental role’ in the preliminary and grand finals. AFL Covid19

Exemptions to travel into Western Australia from Victoria will only be granted to people essential for the AFL grand final to play.

“We’ve been consistently adopting this position throughout last season and this year as well, any person coming from, for example, Victoria would have to undergo 14 days quarantine and testing,” he said. With the state’s latest outbreak showing no signs of slowing, it is likely the final will be played in Perth at the end of September. Victoria recorded 80 new COVID-19 cases in the past 24 hours to midnight, with 39 in quarantine throughout their infectious period.Mr McLaughlin said the AFL selected Perth with its “eyes open”, given the WA government’s hair-trigger when it came to lockdowns and border restrictions.

If Victoria’s cases continue to rise WA may upgrade its classification from medium risk to high risk, which requires travellers to provide proof of a negative PCR COVID test and proof of at least one dose of vaccine in addition to 14 days quarantine. “Both of the places that they are playing the first round of finals are in very low-risk states in South Australia and Tasmania, so they are different conditions in which those players and officials are at. If they were in New South Wales, they would not be coming,” Mr Dawson said.

“We played hard to get with strong rules, strong protocols and because we have, as a state, done so well the AFL and rugby union are looking at holding events here.”
