Instead of building expensive new power stations, the energy sector is increasingly focused on trying to get households and industries to cut back on electricity use when demand is high.
Late morning, as the temperature rises, Peter Casey reaches for the remote and turns on the air conditioning at his home in suburban Brisbane.
"We cycle down the compressor, which is what creates the cooling part of the air conditioner," Peter Pierce, an executive general manager at Energy Queensland, said. "The fact is that without demand management prices would have been higher than they are today," Mr Pierce said.
