Acting Prime Minister Richard Marles has slapped away Beijing's scathing criticism of Canberra and warned the powerhouse nation's extension of its military drills in Taiwan has become 'deeply concerning'.
Beijing this week called out the actions of Foreign Minister Penny Wong who released a joint statement with her US and Japanese counterparts on Friday to condemn China.
Marles - who is Acting Prime Minister while Anthony Albanese is on leave - told First Edition on Wednesday that Australia will always speak up on its national interests. He then stressed Canberra will continue to respond with a"professional, respectful and diplomatic tone" and that is simply"all we can do".
"We’ve also made it clear, the tone under this government will be very different to the one we saw under the former government. Mr Marles was then asked about the heightened fears of an invasion in Taiwan after China extended its military exercises this week with no end date mentioned.
