The Royal Commission into Defence and Veteran Suicide has been told an abuse taskforce had to intervene on behalf of complainants.
Defence had “no idea” of the location of certain documents that were needed for a taskforce into systemic abuse, and in some cases had allegedly disposed of records that needed to be kept, a royal commission has heard.
Roberts-Smith told commissioners many victims were more upset over how the Defence Force handled their assault case, compared to their feelings about the perpetrator. “One of the things that happened from time to time, I don’t know how often, an applicant would’ve gone to DVA and said he or she was raped, assaulted ... they suffered enormously from it, physical and psychological injuries,” Roberts-Smith said.
“We were requesting information we knew there were files on certain things, but Defence had no idea where they were,” he said. “There were problems with them too because units had disposed of records, or not kept records that ought to have been kept.”
