With the Princess of Wales' shock cancer diagnosis, one mum shares what it was like having to break similar news to her young daughter
When John and Claire Haywood sat their daughter Ellie down to tell her 'daddy has cancer', they'd not made the decision lightly.
Her husband John was just 45 and fit and healthy when a bruise on his ankle turned out to be a very rare sarcoma. "So many children don't get told, but it's to their detriment," she added. "I've looked after some patients and children haven't been told until the family are round the death bed. "We didn't say 'no', as we were told not to give false assurance, but we said 'daddy's going to be treated at Christie and get the best care and might need to have surgery."
"At the time we had no back on the house as we were having work done, so we were living in the front with a make-shift kitchen," she said.
