Tony Armstrong has reflected on racist comments made by his former teammate Taylor Walker and offered his view on punishments going forward.
Walker who captained the Adelaide Crows from 2015 to 2019 was fined $20,000 and handed a six-match ban for making a racist slur towards North Adelaide’s Robbie Young during a SANFL match in July.
“When you’ve got a friend or someone you’ve been close with for that long and it comes out that he’s said something like that, it really hurts,” Armstrong told Fox Footy.Armstrong said the AFL should have come down harder on Walker as he referenced a similar incident involving Peter Everitt in 1999 – Everitt was handed a four-week ban and a $20,000 fine.
“We always have to, with a smile on our face, be the ones who have to always take the higher ground, not be angry, be the ones to put the olive branch out and educate. Since the incident, the former Adelaide Crows captain has apologised for the incident saying there is “no excuse or justification” for his words.J.Sherman received a four week ban way back in 2011.“They are unacceptable and I take full accountability for that. I am deeply ashamed,” he said.
“It’s times like this you want to make phone calls to people you played alongside and you apologise to them,” he said.
