Sydney may be quieter than usual this summer. While the bushfires are devastating vast swathes of the state, many Sydneysiders are planning to leave the city for respite from grey-brown skies and polluted air.

Instead they have made a last-minute decision to visit family in Malaysia and will stay at least three weeks depending on conditions in Sydney. Miriam Hart and Nick Ward from Manly pulled their daughter Lila, 7, out of school before the end of term and headed to the south coast seeking fresh air. "We're smoke refugees," Mr Ward said.
