Rachaporn Choochuey, architect of this year’s MPavilion, with a Thai dancer as the pavilion takes shape.“We are always interested in how to build with the minimum material,” Choochuey says. “Fabric is easy to handle, it’s light, it could be quite unconventional when you think of architecture.”celebrates the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Australia and Thailand with a Thai festival featuring a lantern-making workshop, monk blessing and traditional long drum dance.
At the close of each five-month season, the MPavilion is gifted by the Naomi Milgrom Foundation to the people of Victoria and relocated to a new, permanent home.Choochuey says the expected lifespan of the fabric construction — more than 20 years — is longer than many contemporary buildings. This extends to the seating in the MPavilion which comprises lightweight, zero-waste stools produced from robotically extruded recyclable plastic made by Re-pete trio Sam Tomkins, Iain Maxwell and Ben Ennis-Butler from the University of Canberra.
