He was a wounded Army veteran, she was a failed R&B star. Together they’ve transmuted trauma into powerfully uplifting gospel and country music – and John Legend is set to film their love story

ichael Trotter did his very best to stop Tanya from falling for him. I’m a screwup, he told her. I’ve already got a divorce in my 20s, I’ve been to war twice, I’m wounded. I am not a catch. “She just looked at me and said, ‘Are you done?’” says Michael. “‘Because I’m going to tell you what I see. I see a king. You just need the right kind of queen.’”

It is a creation of great experience and even greater joy. Last year they opened for John Legend’s tour; their own love story is so epic that Legend is now making it into a movie. His service completed, he met Tanya Blount in August 2010, when they played the same festival in Maryland. Tanya was on her second musical career – her first had peaked in her teens, when she appeared opposite Lauryn Hill and Whoopi Goldberg in Sister Act 2 and signed a deal with Sean Combs’s record label to become an R&B star at 16. “I knew at eight that this was what I wanted to do,” says Tanya.

Michael, by comparison, was candid to a fault. They fell for each other at first sight. “I remember her saying: ‘I’m not looking for a bank account, I’m not looking for a six pack,” says Michael. “And I jumped for joy because I don’t have neither.”Photograph: John Angelillo/UPI/Rex/Shutterstock

‘One battle in a broader culture war’: Schoellhammer on victory for Dutch farmers‘One battle in a broader culture war’: Schoellhammer on victory for Dutch farmersWebster University Assistant Professor Ralph Schoellhammer says the political victory for Dutch farmers is “one battle in a broader culture war” as the world still sees industrialisation as the enemy. “It’s Avatar, it’s Lord of the Rings – the industrial guys, the ones with machinery, are always the bad ones, and the kind of noble savages who live in harmony with nature are always the good ones,” he told Sky News Australia.

Dutch farmers win political battle but ‘the war itself rages on’Webster University Assistant Professor Ralph Schoellhammer says Dutch farmers definitely “won the battle” as the Farmer-Citizen Movement looks set to be the biggest party in the nation’s upper house, but the “war itself rages on”. The farmers’ party was only set up in 2019 and won almost 20 per cent of the vote. “This is really a great success, we should not minimise it, but we should also keep in mind … the Dutch farmers are a kind of their own,” Mr Schoellhammer told Sky News Australia. “They are the Silicon Valley of agriculture, they are not like 19th-century yeoman farmers – they are very modern, industrialised, in many ways the best capitalism can offer.”
