Sir BeefyBotham has opened up about the passing of his great friend Dean Jones and his memories of a ground where he enjoyed so much success through the 1980s | Pierik_AgeSport Ashes BoxingDayTest
“Deano was a shock. Rod Loader, my manager in Australia, rang me. I was driving in the highlands of Scotland with Kath, my wife, and we were driving along, and it was Rod on the phone and he said: ’Mate, are you driving? I said: ‘Yeah’. He said: ‘Pull over’. He said: ‘I have got something to tell you’. That’s when he broke the news to me.
“We were very close - we played together at Durham. And I got on extremely well with Deano and Jane and the kids. I will definitely be catching up with Jane at some stage because I am sure Deano would have left a bottle of that lovely red of his in the cellar somewhere,” Botham said. Jones’ charisma and forthright opinions were always a welcome feature when he popped by the press box during the Boxing Day Test. Botham and Jones, a former columnist with this masthead, are alike in that manner, and Botham’s love of the MCG is something Jones, a proud Victorian, appreciated.
Botham, Test cricket’s one-time leading wicket-taker, has fond on-field memories of the great cauldron. In 1982-83,which ended a 70-run stand with Allan Border and gave the tourists a three-run win, ensuring the Ashes were alive. Botham, arguably the greatest all-rounder of all time, was also in the thick of the action four years later, when the tourists stormed to an innings-and-14-run win inside three days. Having returned from a side strain, Botham claimed 5-41 off 16 overs in Australia’s first innings, sharing all 10 wickets with Gladstone Small .
