Figures have revealed the wealthiest areas in each state that reported the highest personal incomes in Australia.
that shows Australia’s gross median income rose to $48,360 a year in 2016/17.
The Australian Capital Territory continued to have the highest median income of $63,038 but its wages showed no growth over the year. Across Australia, the two highest medians were in Western Australia, including Ashburton in the Pilbara region and Peppermint Grove in Perth. In other states and territories, the highest incomes were mostly located in major cities apart from Queensland, where the coastal mining town of Weipa was the highest earning local government area, and the Northern Territory, where the satellite city of Palmerston, close to Darwin topped the list.
The statistics also revealed the areas that had the most income inequality, which is based on a measure called the Gini coefficient. The regions with the least income inequality were Brighton in Tasmania, Weipa in Queensland and Roxby Downs in South Australia. This is despite ABS figures on Thursday confirming unemployment had fallen to 5.2 per cent, helped by a surge in part-time work. Underemployment also fell from 8.5 per cent to 8.3 per cent.
EY’s chief economist Jo Masters agreed that data suggested job creation was not driving unemployment down as hoped.
