Week of warm weather and storms a taste of forecast rainy spring | angus_dalton

, it said there was an 80 per cent chance most of eastern Australia would see higher than average rainfall this spring due to an emerging negative Indian Ocean Dipole event.

During a negative IOD event, the eastern Indian Ocean near Indonesia warms up, causing moist air to flow down southwards and fall as rain across Australia. IOD events usually begin in the cooler months and operate until the end of spring.“Most of the eastern two-thirds of the mainland has more than double the normal chance of unusually high rainfall ,” the outlook read.

There’s a 50 per cent chance a third rain-summoning La Niña event will form by the end of the year. Four out of the seven climate models the bureau consults predict the La Niña system will redevelop in spring. The remaining three models predict the system will remain neutral. Our Breaking News Alert
