The West Papua National Liberation Army told the ABC the attack was part of the group's strategy to reclaim independence for West Papua, which is currently part of Indonesia. Tensions have escalated significantly in recent years, with increasing violent conflict between pro-independence fighters and Indonesian authorities.Akouboo Amatus Douw, chair of TPNPB's diplomatic council, said the pilot would be held hostage until their demands were met.
