WA Premier Mark McGowan says the state has recorded one new local COVID-19 case in a backpacker who travelled from Queensland and was unvaccinated.
The man was a 25-year-old who was originally from France, and at the moment, it is believed he is infected with Delta rather than Omicron. The backpacker arrived one hour before WA enforced its hard border with Queensland, meaning he was not required to undergo testing before entering. Mr McGowan said the man’s girlfriend and four other close contacts have been contacted, are undergoing testing requirements, and will be directed to hotel quarantine.“If you have been to any of the exposure sites or if you are feeling unwell, it is important to get tested,” he said.
“Clinics are in the process of being ramped up. They will stay open tonight until 10pm and keep operating throughout the Christmas period, including Christmas Day and Boxing Day.”
