Industrial action will freeze all train services across Greater Sydney from Thursday night to Sunday morning. The impacts of this could be heightened by congestion and reduced access to emergency services.
As workers prepare to walk away from Sydney's trains this week — shutting down the entire network for more than two days — questions are emerging about how this will impact the city.
"We've seen the transport minister come out three times in the last 24 hours, which is more times than the NSW government has negotiated with us," RTBU NSW secretary Toby Warnes said. Roughly 720,000 passenger journeys occur each day via Sydney's train network, according to government figures. "They're going to get every bus, taxi, Uber, minibus out on the streets of Sydney to try to lessen the impact, and every little bit will help, but it's not going to be enough," Dr Clifton said of the government's expected response.One repercussion of this shutdown, and the government's likely response, will be an influx of traffic congestion across Greater Sydney.
"Surge pricing is obviously a concern for travellers, but it's a key mechanism for getting more drivers out onto the streets," he said.According to a spokesperson for the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission , it is not illegal in Australia to increase prices due to high demand, but any surge or dynamic pricing must be made aware up-front.A second, potentially dire, side effect of this shutdown could be reduced access to essential services, including emergency healthcare.
