Inaugurated in February 2020 with the “Namaste Trump” event during the then-US President’s visit to India, the stadium has since hosted England’s cricket team seven times,“You think it’s going to be really massive but when you’re standing there and you go right to the top, it’s immense,” says Isha Rathee, a principal architect at Australian firm Populous who is based in New Delhi.

After Populous won the bid to design the Narendra Modi Stadium in 2016 alongside building contractors Larsen and Toubro, the brief from the Gujarat Cricket Association was simple.“Create the world’s largest and best cricket stadium,” says Rathee. “It’s sounds fairly simple but there were a lot of complexities.”“The local context was really important,” says Rathee.

“You get a feel for that podium as soon as you enter from the north. As soon as you enter there is an arrival plaza and the steps leading up to the podium. All pedestrians go onto the podium and vehicles at the ground level. This also allowed us to create large plaza spaces.”
