As a crime scene cleaner for more than two decades, Christine Cummings has seen it all, but the thought of finding a loved one is what scares her the most.
Christine Cummings is desperate to spare families the trauma of crime scenes because — as the saying goes — what is seen cannot be unseen. She has witnessed the aftermath of some of SA's worst crimesShe has spent 24 years as a crime scene cleaner and sees herself as a protector of both the victims and their families, affected by murders, suicides and other terrible acts.
"They don't have to see the trauma, especially if there's major crime, the violence, it's disgusting — walking in … you can see the violence," she said, speaking from her home-based office in Adelaide's north-eastern suburbs."It's not about the job, it's about my people."Ms Cummings has herself been a victim of domestic violence and was drawn to her calling in horrific circumstances.
"I was left with a mess and that's how, a few weeks after, Crime and Accident Scene Cleaning was born."She said the bonds formed with victims and their families have more than compensated her for the trauma of witnessing the aftermath of so many terrible crime scenes. "I have a whole book, a folder of thank you cards; I get hugs, I get kisses, I get little presents sent to me — it's so rewarding," she said.
