At that point, Microsoft joined Epic in the legal proceedings to argue Apple's retaliation was not only illegal but representative of the excessive power it wields. Microsoft is also a recent victim of Apple's guidelines, as plans to launch its streaming Xbox Game Pass library on iPhones were blocked.Apple was not able to block Epic's development tools at this time, but a decision over whether Epic should be allowed to host its own store on iPhones could be a year or more away.
"If you look at Apple Music versus Spotify, Apple Music has a real advantage. If you subscribe to Spotify on an iPhone, it pays 15 to 30 per cent to Apple," he said. "The situation back then was really favourable to developers. We worked directly one-on-one with Apple on promotion and things like that," said Ivanovic, whose company launched Pocket Weather AU on day one of the App Store's availability.
