After a marathon trial, Justice Stephen Hall will today rule on whether or not Bradley Edwards is the Claremont serial killer. Here's a guide to get you up to speed on the case ahead of the monumental verdict.
Today Justice Stephen Hall will hand down his decision in the trial of Bradley Edwards for the historic murders of Sarah Spiers, Jane Rimmer and Ciara Glennon — the so-called Claremont serial killings.Edwards is accused of abducting and murdering three womenIt's one of the most anticipated verdicts in WA legal history, and a huge crowd of media and onlookers is expected at the WA Supreme Court to hear it read.
Sarah Spiers used a pay phone to call for a taxi on the night she disappeared from Claremont in January 1996. The key element in the case has been the presence of a miniscule amount of Edwards' DNA on a combined sample of two of Ms Glennon's fingernails. The prosecution has placed a great deal of emphasis on this infinitesimal speck of biological material, which Edwards admits is his.
However, there was no evidence presented that the samples were ever examined at the same time or stored in the same place. A series of screams in the Mosman Park area on the night Sarah Spiers vanished and a car similar to to the one Edwards' drove at the time seen in the same vicinityEssentially, if Justice Hall finds the prosecution failed to prove its case beyond reasonable doubt.
