King & Wood Mallesons boss Renae Lattey still believes in gender targets, even though her firm missed one for 2022.
Wood Mallesons chief executive partner Renae Lattey still believes in gender targets – even though her firm missed a crucial marker for women partners this year.
Despite comprising more than 60 per cent of senior associates and special counsel – the stepping stones to partnership – women were still in the minority when it came to new partners. Of the 295 new partners, only 45.6 per cent were women. “It takes some time. We are above parity in terms of appointments, but because the firm has been predominantly male for so many years it is going to take some time for that [a 50-50 partnership].”– 40 per cent men, 40 per cent women and 20 per cent women, men or non-binary – now commonplace. The results have been mixed. Global firm Baker McKenzie was the first to set a 40-40-20 target in 2019, and set a deadline of July 2025. In the current survey its ratio was 29.1 per cent.
“When you hear someone say ‘I don’t think I want partnership’, you can’t just stand back and say that person has made an informed decision,” she said.Advertisement Another, Angela Weber, said work flexibility was “really fundamental to the juggle”, along with the support of senior partners.
