A 2020 complaint stands in contrast to chairman Michael Hammes’ claim he was unaware of his CEO’s alleged conduct until a “few months” ago.
can reveal a formal whistleblowing complaint, made through James Hardie’s externally-managed hotline EthicsPoint, was relayed to Mr Hammes’ board between March and April 2020 – almost two years prior to the period at which Mr Hammes said the alleged behaviour had begun.
“During my tenure, we engaged in a broad and hugely successful transformation of James Hardie. In each of the two fiscal years after these comments allegedly were made, I received the highest possible rating from James Hardie’s Board of Directors. These anonymous and unsubstantiated opinions are nothing more than character assassination.
Although the whistleblower received confirmation the complaint had been brought “to the attention of members of the board” who were taking the issues “seriously”, the individual never received information relating to any outcome and was not interviewed for any possible investigation. “No further whistleblower complaints were received until late 2021 and again, each of these complaints were thoroughly investigated in accordance with our Ethics Hotline Policy, including an independent review and additional surveys.“Mr Truong was given ample opportunities to correct his behaviours and demonstrate sincere change including through the use of executive coaching and counselling regarding aspects of his management style.
The complainant also said Mr Truong was difficult during employee presentations, adding: “If it wasn’t his idea then he shuts things down without a really good reason. If you give a lot of detail, then it’s too much. If you keep things at a higher level, it’s not enough detail. “He talks about empowerment and accountability for example but he micromanages his direct reports and when they try to make decisions, as they should, he berates them and tells them to ‘fly in formation’.”Mr Hammes earlier this month cited the threat of other executives resigning, and the fact that a number had tendered their resignation due to the alleged conduct of Mr Truong, as the reason why the board had to act to sack the chief executive.
