As cases of coronavirus continue to surge across Europe the local head of the WHO warns that 'weekly cases have now exceeded those reported when the pandemic first peaked'.

The European head of the World Health Organization is warning of "alarming rates of transmission" of coronavirus in parts of the continent.UK proposes tougher measures to "protect" Christmas"We do have a very serious situation unfolding before us," Dr Hans Kluge said in a press briefing on Thursday .Dr Kluge said the region's case numbers totalled more than 300,000 last week, adding the rise in new cases should serve as a "wake up call".

With a coronavirus caseload above 600,000 and more than 30,000 confirmed deaths, Spain has been the hardest hit European country in the second wave of the pandemic."Although these numbers reflect more comprehensive testing, it also shows alarming rates of transmission across the region," he said. The Robert Koch Institute, Germany's national disease control centre, said that 2,194 new cases were reported over the past day.

Writing in the Sun newspaper on Thursday, Mr Johnson says the only way to be certain the country can enjoy Christmas "is to be tough now".
