Countries around the world are continuing to see COVID-19 cases surge to record highs as the World Health Organisation warns Omicron is still of 'very high' risk.
The WHO said in its weekly epidemiological update the new coronavirus variant displayed a “growth advantage” over the Delta strain with a “doubling time” of two-to-three days as well as rapid increases of cases where it has become the dominant strain, such as in the United States and United Kingdom.
The Centre of Disease Control and Prevention’s COVID Data Tracker reported 441,278 new infections on December 27 which marked a mammoth jump from the previous day’s case load of 187,487 infections. COVID-19 patients freed from quarantine will be required to wear a face mask for the following five days while out in the community.
