The situation has prompted some to claim that motorists are being 'held to ransom', but fuel companies say critics don't see the bigger picture.

According to the Australian Institute of Petroleum, the national average retail price of diesel was $2.27 per litre in the first week of December, 29.8 cents higher than the average wholesale price.

"If you look at October, [profit margins] were actually near zero to negative. That really demonstrates that part of the challenge for most retailers is navigating some extreme volatility, in terms of both oil prices and the consequent impact on wholesale diesel prices."Mr McKenzie said the industry was "dealing with a level of volatility that we haven't seen in the market for more than 25 to 30 years".

‘Likely’ a deal on coal price caps will be struck at National Cabinet tomorrow‘Likely’ a deal on coal price caps will be struck at National Cabinet tomorrowSky News Political Editor Andrew Clennell says “a deal being struck at National Cabinet” tomorrow regarding the coal price cap “now looks likely”. “As we revealed yesterday, the federal government wants New South Wales and Queensland to cap the domestic coal price at $125 a tonne, in a bid to avoid large power bill increases next year,” Mr Clennell said. “This will accompany a cap on gas prices the federal government is set to announce, of $13 a gigajoule. “The plan, presented by the Prime Minister to the Premiers, had no compensation money for royalties lost attached to it.” Mr Clennell said the plan instead has funding for “a range of programs to boost renewables”. “Now I think the federal government will stump up more cash before this deal is signed, and I think that detail is being worked on now.”
