New research out of Victoria is good news for regional tourism: Melburnians’ want more time to explore the bush and coast. But will employers come to the party offering the flexibility to combine annual leave with “work from anywhere” days.

New research commissioned by the Victorian government is set to pit bosses wanting their staff back in the office against state tourism bodies hungry for regional tourists.

But this all still falls way short: the number of arrivals taking short-term trips in Australia in May was 65.4 per cent below the pre-COVID level in May 2019. New Zealand was the largest source country, accounting for 20 per cent of all visitor arrivals in May. People would head out to the regions – such as the Great Ocean Road – for longer if they could use a few “work from anywhere” days in the mix, new research found.

“Our research shows that if Victorians can combine annual leave with a couple of ‘work from anywhere’ days, that flexibility could spell a great result for both regional tourism and employers.”Mr McClements said staff let loose for a full week would return to the office more refreshed than after just a weekend.
