There have been some remarkable vintages in Beaujolais of late. Here are the bottles you should be buying now.
By Lettie Teague Sept. 26, 2019 12:57 pm ET A GREAT VINTAGE in Burgundy inspires legions of buyers to pursue the very best wines, often regardless of very high prices. A great Beaujolais year? I’d bet most oenophiles couldn’t name one.
Mr. Barbet’s family is one of the oldest and best-known names in Beaujolais. They co-own two other important estates, too: Domaine des Billards in Saint-Amour and Château de Fleurie in Fleurie. Complex is certainly the word for wines from Jean Foillard, whose rich, multilayered 2017 Jean Foillard Cuvée Corcelette Morgon could command twice the price if it was produced in a different Burgundy zone. The friends I gathered recently to taste Beaujolais with me loved the Foillard—but when I told them the price, they balked. “That’s not what Beaujolais costs,” said one. To her, Beaujolais should be “always under $20 a bottle.”Brian Lynch, the Berkeley, Calif.
Later I discovered the first two are not officially available in the States. According to Anthony Lynch, son of importer Kermit Lynch, both wines are made from small parcels of very old vines and sold only in France . The 2018 Côte de Brouilly, however, is widely distributed stateside.
