How did the obscure matter of transgender children’s participation in sport become an issue of national prominence upon which politicians simply must have an opinion? | OPINION by Jacqueline Maley auspol ausvotes ausvotes2022 ausvotes22 scottmorri...

become an issue of national prominence upon which politicians simply must have an opinion? Just like Ernest Hemingway’s quip about the descent into bankruptcy, it happened two ways. Gradually, then suddenly.

A most un-Australian stance, I would have thought. There are many women and men who are bewildered and threatened by the speed at which this debate seems to have come upon them. Morrison is speaking to them when he said this week that “Australians are getting pretty fed up with having to walk on eggshells every day because they may or may not say something one day that’s going to upset someone”. This is the highly successful Trumpian strategy of being the one who “says what we are all thinking”.
