Why I delivered an ultimatum to Dominic Perrottet | Alex Greenwich

We’ve heard the Premier say “boys should play boys, girls should play girls”. Sounds innocent enough, except if you’re a young trans person who understands that this slogan is designed to provoke unfounded fear that people are transitioning to stack sporting teams and that the playing field is no longer safe.

When asked to publicly weigh into this sensitive topic in the midst of an election campaign, a Premier with a better grip on the issue would have reiterated the right of everybody to participate in sport and that it was important for the sporting codes to uphold the existing guidelines about transgender people in sport.

But we now have a situation where mental health support services are reporting to me that trans kids are asking their parents if they can still play sport with their friends. Thanks to other recent ignorant comments from political leaders, calls to transgender support services from young people and families have suddenly skyrocketed and services are reporting that in schools, we’ve gone from verbal harassment to violent bullying of trans students.
