After two upset knockout victories, Tim Tszyu’s next opponent strongly believes he is primed to pull off a third.
In March of last year, Tszyu became the first Australian to headline a non-title fight in the United States, beating Terrell Gausha at the Armory in Minneapolis. The historic venue, which has been used for purposes as varied as hosting Sugar Ray Robinson fights to Prince’s music video “1999”, was at capacity as the locals clamoured for their first glimpse of Tszyu.
As Tszyu departed the ring to cool down and complete his media commitments, the venue staff began folding up the empty chairs. It was at this moment that Mendoza pulled off the first of two stunning upsets that would ultimately put him on a collision course with Tszyu. The Tszyu-Mendoza clash marks the first time the Australian defends his WBO super-welterweight world title following the organisation’s decision to elevate him to full champion status as soon as Jermell Charlo is announced in the ring for his highly anticipated fight with Canelo Alvarez on September 30.
