Daly Cherry-Evans isn’t a fan of Sunday stand-alone games, but is happy to side with clubs when it comes to how the future Origin schedule should look.

Triumphant Queensland skipper Daly Cherry-Evans says NRL clubs should have the major say in how next year’s Origin schedule takes shape because “they are the ones with the most to lose”.to play all three games on consecutive Wednesdays in 2023 - with the Sunday stand-alone Origin to be scrapped as part of the next broadcast deal - Cherry-Evans said the game had to be guided by the general feeling in clubland.

“Whatever schedule you come up with, someone will always be unhappy,” Cherry-Evans said. “The clubs are the ones who should be at the forefront of the conversation because they are the ones who have the most to lose with their players - they should have a big say in what the future series looks like.

Cherry-Evans backed up for Manly on the weekend, but he and Sea Eagles teammate Jake Trbojevic have since enjoyed the past three days off. Clubs pushed hard for the stand-alone Sunday game during the last TV deal so there was one less club game their stars would miss. The NRL will nail down a draw later this year, but their plan to revert to three consecutive Wednesdays will mean some of the game’s biggest names will be unavailable for at least a couple of club games during the Origin period.
