Analysis: Why hasn’t NSW hit 95 per cent double vaxxed? | marywardy

Lower vaccination rates in young adults and a growing number of people who failed to return for their second shot are keeping NSW from its 95 per cent vaccination goal, data reveals.

Yet, despite the state failing to even achieve 95 per cent first dose coverage in the age group - it passed 93 per cent full vaccination in the age group last week - vaccine communications experts said it would be unwise to push back the easing of rules for the unvaccinated further.

With rising cases linked to pubs and nightclubs, UNSW vaccine communication researcher Associate Professor Holly Seale said it was possible rates in this age group would increase. With lower cases and the focus on reopening and the summer holidays, vaccinations are certainly less front and centre than they were three months ago and there is less hype around having a first shot.As to whether the approach of December 15 may have slowed uptake, Professor Leask said keeping the unvaccinated under stay-at-home orders “most definitely has helped bring some people around”, particularly back in October when businesses first reopened.
