Having a bit more “me time” than usual, I discovered the small joys of passive socialising.
Go on, call me Nigel No Mates. I’ll laugh in the face of that primary school taunt because I’ve started going to the pub on my own, and I love it.With my partner sent overseas to work for an extended period, the “Meet at the pub?” text we usually send each other at the end of the week has been momentarily retired, leaving me occasionally at a loose end.Wolter Peeters
However, over the course of a few visits, I didn’t just chill out, but also realised the pub had a kind of ambience. This was not due to the usual checklist of exposed light bulbs, bare-wooden benches and southern-fried chicken – what made this place feel special was the other people. Seidler tells me there’s a “male loneliness epidemic” happening in Australia. For some guys, even mustering the nerves to head into a pub can be overwhelming. We fear looking embarrassed, when the reality is, as Seidler bluntly put it, “No one cares.”And while taking initiative by asking a mate out for a walk, or to do something else active, is fantastic, taking yourself out for some passive socialising has its place.
