Salvatore Babones is among the experts who have noticed the Nepalese trend and regard it as a problem - not for the universities, who take payment up front, but for the students and their families.
Until recently, Hari Bhandari ran an association for Nepalese international students at the University of Technology, Sydney. They would host social functions and forge links within Sydney's booming Nepalese student community. But the group disbanded, formally at least, because too few people were attending events.
In October, 52,000 Nepalese were studying in Australia. Total enrolments were higher, at nearly 66,000, as some people are enrolled in multiple programs. The federal education department says the Nepalese market was worth $2.6 billion to Australia in 2018-19, up from $1.6 billion the previous year. He says it is obvious why young Nepalese want to study overseas. "Our country is a small country and not good enough in terms of economy and the political crisis ... changing government all the time and not much development," he says.

International students are required to pay fees up front and the system is designed to weed out people who can't support themselves in Australia. Overwhelmingly the Nepalese students who do come to Australia overwhelmingly choose NSW. Of the 66,000 who enrolled in the 12 months to October, about 42,500 were in NSW and 11,300 in Victoria - a trend even more pronounced than Indian students' preference for Melbourne over Sydney.
