Hairdressers are worried they'll become the new blacksmiths with the art of the trade lost to low wages and tough conditions in an unregulated industry.

One hairdresser in Townsville says shortened apprenticeships and one-year training courses haven't worked She said it was not unusual for customers to wait an hour for a walk-in cut or a shave, but she simply cannot find the staff to reduce those waiting times."We are finding that once we have done that training with them, a lot of them are happy to go and work for themselves," she said.The Australian Government Department of Jobs and Small Business reports that there has been a shortage of hairdressers in Australia for more than 20 years.
