The billionaire lost her conduit to the board of the journalism funder, and its independent directors soon departed.
Mr Teperson abruptly resigned from both the JNI and his chairmanship of the Judith Neilson Family Office in April, which sources close to JNI said caused Ms Neilson to rethink her approach to supporting journalism in Australia.
At a two-minute board meeting on Thursday, the four were replaced by Beau Neilson, the younger of Ms Neilson’s two daughters with ex-husband and Platinum Asset Management founder Kerr Neilson, and lawyer Daniel Appleby, a long-time adviser to the billionaire. Sources said that until Mr Teperson’s departure from the JNI board, its patron had given no clue she was unhappy with its direction. Ms Neilson vowed to have no role in JNI’s governance when she established it in 2018, and had previously kept that promise to the extent she had not even met all the directors in person.
